French Onion Dip
Football season is starting and I can’t think of a better gameday go to than a delicious homemade dip. Today, we are making three of our favorites. I am starting with our version of a French onion dip. I use caramelized onions, fresh thyme and dash of Worcestershire to give the dip a rich flavor unlike any store bought version. I know if you give this one a try, you will never want the store bought stuff again!!
I start by slicing up two large white onions. Here, I cut them into rings and then in half, but it was a little difficult to eat in the end, so I think it is better to dice the onions.
Begin to caramelize the onions by cooking them in 2 tablespoons of olive oil over a medium-high flame for about 10 minutes until they become translucent.
When the onions have softened and become translucent, season them with some salt, pepper, garlic powder and crushed red pepper.
Next, add in the Worcestershire sauce. This is definitely the secret ingredient and gives the onions a very rich flavor.
Then, add in the leaves of about two sprigs of thyme. Thyme is one of my favorite herbs because it has such a fresh and bright flavor.
After the onions have been seasoned, continue to cook them for another 10-15 minutes until they become light brown and begin to caramelize. Then remove them from the heat and let them cool for about 5 minutes before you add them to the other ingredients.
In a large bowl, combine the sour cream and mayonnaise.
Season the sour cream mixture with salt, pepper, garlic powder and crushed red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly.
Now, add the onions into the sour cream and mayonnaise mixture and combine.
Crisp up three slices of bacon in a skillet.
Finally, slice the crispy bacon into small crumbles and top the dip with the bacon and some more fresh thyme.
Serve with your favorite potato chips or crispy veggies like cucumber, celery and green peppers. Enjoy!
